Grandma’s Good Fudge

From the kitchen of Mary Marjorie Winslow Steele Rumsey

This was “the” treat my mom made for all her friends and family at Christmas. As far as my boys are concerned, there is NO other fudge. This also makes great gifts! I make this every Christmas (lots and lots of it).

  • 2 cups Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (If you are feeling “adult”, switch to dark chocolate chips.)
  • 1/2 pound Butter
  • 1 7 ounce jar Marshmallow Creme
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 3-4 cups Chopped Walnuts (This is totally optional. Use any nuts you like or leave them out.)
  • 4-1/2 cups White Sugar
  • 2 cups Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Mix chocolate chips, butter, marshmallow creme, vanilla and walnuts in a large bowl and set aside.

Mix sugar and evaporated milk in a heavy pot and bring to a boil. Boil for 6-1/2 to 7 minutes. For those who aren’t used to making candy, google “soft ball stage”. This is totally dependent on your altitude and temperature.

Pour over the chocolate chip mixture and beat (and beat and beat) until thick. Until it starts to cool and thickens up (at least five minutes). If it was cooked to “soft ball”, it will be a good consistency when cool.

Pour into buttered dishes and let cool before serving.
