Great-Grandma’s Banana Bread

From the kitchen of Martha Wyne Davis Winslow

This simple recipe came from my grandmother. She made it in thin loaves, filling the pan about half full. The slices remind me of tea sandwiches. I have also made this in my Instant Pot! I use a 6 cup bundt pan. Makes two very moist bundts.

  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Shortening (Truth! I use butter!)
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 or 3 Ripe Bananas (depending on size, more is better)
  • 1 cup Walnuts (This is totally optional, but if you like nuts, go for it!)

Mix all ingredients until thoroughly moistened. Pour into two greased loaf pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes. Do not over-bake!
