Martha Wyne Winslow’s Red Apples

From the kitchen of Martha Wyne Winslow

This recipe was always part of Grandma’s holiday table.

  • 3 cups Sugar
  • 3 cups Water
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks
  • Enough water to cover apples
  • 12 Cooking Apples, like Granny Smith
  • 1 tablespoon Red Food Coloring
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice

Peel and quarter apples, cover with water and lemon juice to prevent browning and set aside.

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a large sauce pan or dutch oven. Boil three (3) to five (5) minutes. Add food coloring and cinnamon sticks, being careful so that it does not boil over.

Gently add the peeled and quartered apples to the sugar mixture. Continue to stir gently until the apples have reached the desired softness, 7 to 10 minutes.
