From Liard Hot Springs, BC to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory.
I’m not sure what I expected, but going from territory to territory in Canada is just like going from state to state in the US. I think the initial border crossing into Canada has scarred me for life! The drive was beautiful, and even though we say it every day, it IS beautiful, I think I need a bigger vocabulary!
As far as I can tell, Watson Lake’s claim to fame started out as a way for a homesick US soldier working on the Alaska Highway to honor his hometown. They put up a sign that listed the name of the town and the distance. And the rest,as they say, is history. They add new, empty posts as needed.
Anyone can put up a sign, you just have to bring your own tools. Our caravan did a group sign, but the picture I took didn’t really turn out. We did not make a sign of our own, maybe next time, though. It would be fun to go back and try to find it in the future.
I’m not sure you could get away with something like this in the states. I’m sure that it would be violating some regulation, somewhere!
I thought this one was especially cool… as this is the town where I was born.
