Days 53 – 55 ~ Skagway, Alaska

Its definitely a sailor’s town!

Every day we were in Skagway, there were at least two cruise ships in port. Disney, Princess, NCL, even some cruise line called Silver Seas. Never heard of that one before. And people, there were lots and lots of people off the ships. None of them have any concept that a 1-ton pick-up truck could do them serious damage.

Another weird thing about Skagway, almost everything closes up at 6 pm or even before. We had a really hard time finding somewhere to eat dinner. I have no idea where people who actually live in Skagway eat! Or drink or shop. The sidewalks roll up as soon as the ships get ready to leave the docks. What about winter? I suspect its a totally different place to be. But I don’t intend to find out. I don’t like being cold.

There is an old ghost town right outside of Skagway, called Dyea. We drove up and took a look. Of course, it was beautiful. Different too. Mud flats when the tide is out. Apparently, it was a gateway to the Klondike for people and supplies. The cargo and passengers would unload in Skagway and take smaller boats to Dyea to begin the trek to gold country. Beautiful, lots of pictures.
