DIY Dawn Power Wash

I love Dawn Power Wash. I DO NOT love the price. I use it in the kitchen for dishes, also in the laundry as a spot remover. It also works well for other grimy jobs like cleaning patio furniture.

So, I scoured Pinterest and found that lots of folks were already using their own version, with just three ingredients. I originally bought the power wash in a 16-ounce bottle and you can make just enough to refill the bottle. I usually make a quart at a time and keep it under the sink.

Is it cheaper? Today, at Walmart, I can buy a 16-ounce refill of Dawn Power Wash for $3.94. 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) of Dawn dishwashing liquid is 14.2 cents. 2 tablespoons of 70% rubbing alcohol is 9.3 cents. 1-3/4 cups (14 ounces) of distilled water is 14 cents. My DIY Dawn Power Wash is 37.5 cents. A savings of $3.56. That is 90%! Worth it? I think so!

If you are making 16 ounces (2 cups, 1 pint)

  • 2 tablespoons Dawn dishwashing liquid (I prefer the blue)
  • 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol (70% or stronger)
  • 1-3/4 cups distilled water

If you are making 32 ounces (4 cups, 2 pints, 1 quart)

  • 1/4 cup Dawn dishwashing liquid (I prefer the blue)
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% or stronger)
  • 3-1/2 cups distilled water

Mix all ingredients together in your chosen container. Almost everything I’ve read says to let it sit for 24 hours before using. I have no idea if that is really necessary, but I still do it.
