Our trip started off with a whimper. Larry was doing his usual pre-trip checks of the truck and trailer. We were scheduled to leave on a Tuesday. Larry found a break in the trailer’s brake line on Friday. We spent the weekend praying for guidance and a solution that wouldn’t delay our trip. Larry started his early Monday morning at our favorite RV repair place. They suggested one place, the next place recommended someplace else… but by 10 am, we found a shop that would look at it right away. And it really was just a crack in the line. Praise the Lord! Disaster averted and still on schedule!
As we get older, our travel style has changed a little bit. We try to keep each day to no more than 250 miles, so our first stop was Benson, Arizona. Just an overnight stop, staying at an Encore RV park. Then onto Las Cruces, New Mexico. We stayed at the local Elks lodge. Its a great lodge and a good place to stay.
On the way to our next stop, we stopped at McGinn’s PistachioLand in Alamogordo. Fun place to stop, but the gift shop was pretty pricey.
Night number three was in Roswell, New Mexico. Again, we stayed at the Elks lodge there. Two things of note. When we checked in, we asked the bartender where we could find the aliens. She laughed and said they were on every corner. Haven’t spent 30 years in California, we thought she meant real, live people who choose to live an alternative lifestyle. Nope. Aliens. Everywhere. Even at McDonalds.
The other thing, our batteries in the trailer failed. We called a mobile RV mechanic. He came out the same day. His company specializes in servicing the RVs in the oil fields all over New Mexico. We got very lucky that he was even in town. God is always watching out for us.
Leaving New Mexico with fresh batteries, we headed to Amarillo, Texas. We met Jim and Sandy Steele (my brother and sister-in-law) there. Because, well, they were on their way north and we were heading east, so… just because we could. We did a lot of fun things, but I didn’t take a lot of pictures. That first evening we went to the Big Texan Steakhouse. Long story short, dinner was less than OK and a cell phone dropped into Jim’s plate, mid-bite.
We also went to the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, the Jack Sizemore RV Museum and the Cadillac Ranch (also underwhelming). Sunday was the Cowboy Church. Lots of catching up. Fun times!
