Bentonite Clay Toothpaste

From the Mindful Momma

I have this weird aversion to the most common ingredient in DIY toothpaste, baking soda. Whether it’s all in my head or it really does make me want to hurl, I can’t say. I just can’t do it. Not in commerical toothpaste or in DIY preparations. So with some Googling and some Pinteresting, I found this recipe. We have used it for years. If I had to give up all my DIY concoctions except for one, this is the one I would keep. This recipe fills a four ounce mason jar.

On Amazon, the bentonite clay I buy is 37 cents an ounce, (2 tablespoons). I get my coconut oil at Costco, 21 cents an ounce. 11 cents for this recipe. The stevia powder is 3 cents (yes, this is correct. 1/4 teaspoon is 1/3 of a SERVING). Sea salt is even less than that. Let’s say 2 cents. I don’t price out the essential oils, because the prices swing so wildly. I use Rocky Mountain Oils, which I think are middle of the road, price wise. Let your wallet be your guide. That’s 53 cents for 4 ounces. 13 cents an ounce. Compared to the cheapest Crest toothpaste, my version is still at least 50% less. The cheapest version of bentonite toothpaste is over $2.00 per ounce on Amazon.

  • 2 Tablespoons powdered bentonite clay
  • 4 Tablespoons water (up to)
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon stevia powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops orange essential oil

Mix powdered clay with water (start with 2 tablespoons) in a small, non-metal bowl, with a non-metal spoon. Add remaining ingredients and mix until well blended. If it’s too runny, add a little more clay. Too thick, well you know the drill. Store in a glass or plastic jar.
