I have used Aveeno Daily Moisturizer for years (lots of years). It is SPF15 and doesn’t cause my sensitive skin to flair. But, the older I get, the cheaper I get and since I’ve retired, I have become enamored with home crafted products. I LOVE this recipe. I made a couple of modifications based on my research, but the recipe mostly remains unchanged.
I added both carrot seed oil for its fabulous SPF properties and Frankincense for its anti-aging properties. To be honest, it doesn’t smell very good, but the fragrance doesn’t last and you get used to it.
Is it cheaper? At Walmart today, Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer is $17.47 (four ounces), $4.36 per ounce. The Walmart version, Equate Naturally Beaming Daily Moisturizer is $9.87 (four ounces), $2.47 per ounce. At Amazon, 16 ounces of almond oil is $7.99, 49 cents per ounce. The price of coconut oil varies widely, but Walmart’s Great Value brand of organic is 24.3 cents per ounce right now. Organic beeswax, a 2-pound bag, is 44 cents per ounce on Amazon. Shea butter is 62 cents per ounce. Vitamin E oil is something else where the price can vary widely. I bought my four ounce bottle ages ago, so to be fair, I estimate $1.00 per ounce. All told, $2.02 for this recipe, 50 cents an ounce.
- ¼ cup almond oil (2 ounces)
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (1 ounce)
- 2 tablespoons beeswax (1 ounce)
- ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil (2.5 grams)
- 1 tablespoon shea butter (1/2 ounce)
- Essential oils of choice (The original recipe says these are optional)
Place all ingredients in a glass jar. I use a quart mason jar. The original recipe says to melt the ingredients in a double boiler. I used the microwave. I heated the mixture in 30 second intervals until the ingredients have melted. Stir occasionally. Once the mixture has melted and all is evenly combined, you can pour it into a small glass jar. The recipe makes about four (4) ounces. I let it cool for a few minutes and buzzed it with an immersion blender to make it creamier before putting it in the small jar. Totally not necessary, the cream melts with the heat of your hands anyway. Let it sit at room temperature until the cream hardens, close the jar’s lid, and store in a cool place. Apply as usual.
Makes four ounces.
